Dealing with disappointment

Disappointment is the collision between what happened and the future you had already pictured. Dan and Tom discuss the temptation to minimise it, rush past it or turn one setback into a judgement about your whole direction.

They offer a slower response: name the loss, separate the event from your identity and decide what the new information changes.

The useful bits

What to take with you

  • Disappointment deserves acknowledgement because an imagined future has genuinely been lost.
  • One rejected outcome does not define the value of the attempt or the person who made it.
  • Avoid making permanent conclusions at the emotional peak of a setback.
  • Ask what the result teaches you about timing, method and the next available route.

[Music] don't believe [Music] I think we need to kick off yeah and welcome to another episode of don't be a door stop um as always welcome back if this is uh your um one of many videos we really appreciate that you're here and if it's and if this is your first video um then welcome we are don't be a dust up we love talking about purpose business life emotions um so this week um it's fascinating that sometimes um some of these podcasts become routine.

Tom0:52

And um you kind of lose the energy and someone so I was just telling Tom before we kicked off it's like oh you need to always bring energy is it fascinating that positive energy typically affects the people um that you kind of come into the room of so if they have positive energy you will feel positive if they have negative energy it can affect the whole room so it's about bringing positive energy um but obviously alongside that it's.

Dan1:15

Also about being authentic so if you're feeling sad then it's fine to say that you're sad yeah and kind of be mindful of course feeling inside but don't feel any responsibility to change that anyway let's go on and let's go you know towards the balance right yeah it probably doesn't help that I'm wearing my uh comfy clothes which is my um or something is it called a snood or was that this isn't it it's a just a hoodie.

Tom1:42

Um trousers that are both similar and it's like in like fluffy material which is basically my lazy clothes so I'm definitely bringing the energy today yeah and I'm like hooded up it's actually snowing here for some random reason and I have no idea why I think it's like three degrees yesterday but maybe it might have dropped a little bit colder but snowing in March I I'd have thought that it was a bit um a bit sunnier and warmer but that's.

Dan2:08

Obviously not okay it's always randomly snows in March the only reason why I remember that or late February is because I remember hockey games getting called off randomly March in the Feb yeah I always anticipate it around now yeah it gets lighter so you're like it might be getting warmer I might be able to wear my shorts soon and then it just goes cold and it changes isn't it talking about hockey a few things that um we'll document rather than create.

Tom2:32

Because it's easier then basically I've been thinking a lot recently about um mindset around sports playing in individual sports I've joined uh local two of our Sports mindset yeah probably part two it's like like just like dragging out of the uh sport mindsets up I was um I've joined the hockey league hockey league that's a different type of story um I've been thinking about mindset about like um competitiveness now the reason why um I've never really fully been.

Dan3:07

Competitive is probably because I don't want to be disappointed that I'm putting in a bunch of energy and then I don't um I don't succeed or I don't win um yeah yeah so therefore I kind of take them and I'm I'm a fine loser I'm a fine winner as well I'm not arrogant in any way but I like playing mind games a little bit because it's just more entertaining um but I recognize I don't always like push uh that extra five percent that.

Tom3:34

Extra 10 in a game of squash or whatever um or in football or whatever it is um because I'm I'm mindful of the disappointment that will come if I have tried harder and you spent that energy and not being um rewarded for it and what I'm trying to do is change that I believe in not committing and not spending that five ten percent energy I'm losing out on like a refinement of skill and getting better and so I.

Dan4:01

Basically will always stay a consistent kind of like level unless I push and give a little bit more um every so often and so I'm opening up myself to more disappointment in doing that but I'm trying to balance on the the benefit my thinking and my and the process of that the benefit of doing that um so like what's your thoughts on that and then I want to share about like if you're doing like basically I want to.

Tom4:29

Share about like kids and what individual sports teach you so what's your thoughts around like the disappointment part because you've done team sports and I know we're kind of like hashing this again but I think these are interesting intricacies that have like come out a bit more recently for me trying to remember what I said in my last podcast to try not to recreate the same content um yeah so my spot is hockey I used to do a lot of um.

Dan4:56

Running costs cross country can't even speak yeah and it's connecting and stuff like that for school so I have done individual sports from a school level but more on a club level uh a national level uh International level it's hockey it's been a team sport so we were talking about this during the week I think I was basically saying in a weird way and I had these discussions in the past with with a ex-boss saying well if you like control.

Tom5:25

And if you if you're happy with your own um being on your own why didn't you do a just a single sport because I used to play squash with them and I don't really I think I just got into that I enjoyed the team element and actually it's quite nice that that it works in your favor and works against you so if you're one of the better players and playing well all the time and the rest of the team aren't.

Dan5:48

Performing then it can be very frustrating but equally if you flip up on the other side if you have a really bad game and everyone else plays well and you overall win you'll get carried through from a team perspective it only gets irritating if it's let's say a cup game or a very important League game um but a lot of the time it probably levels itself out um you can't perform all the time necessarily yeah I think things like.

Tom6:15

Squash um I think if you like detail and control like a single sport makes more sense because actually I look back at it it's like actually I'm very detailed orientated of looking at how can I perfect everything possible but I think I went the root of how can I be so good that I could drag a team up with me which is not very a team Viewpoint it's probably if anyone watches the Michael Jordan sort of documentary it was his.

Dan6:48

Sort of first mindset before then his coach told him that he needs to involve the team a lot more so I think as I've sort of matured and not feel like I'm against everyone to to be the best I think it's definitely helped because then you can tweak different players mindsets or thoughts or positions or or passes and stuff like that so you bring on more of a assistant coach mindset to the table because then you can both help each other out by.

Tom7:17

Doing one twos or assisting someone or they assist you um but yeah it's tough because at the end of the day everyone's got their own mini goal that they might want to score more than you so that might be competitive in that regard so there is a discussion or thought process either on your own or with the individual of okay what is more important so if if my thought is winnings more important than than me specifically scoring then I'm.

Dan7:46

Happy to pass on someone else but equally if you wanted your stats to do really well to get into a higher up team or an international team or if you get scouted it's probably more football than hockey with scouting it is so easy to be selfish because they'll be looking at your goals more so or your sits rather than you doing a as they call a pre-assist nowadays which is like assist before the assist yeah yeah even though they count it you know in.

Tom8:15

Your brain a goal is like 50 points and assist is like 25 and a priestess is like 10. um so you're you're thinking if you get most of the goals you'll get spotted and then you're like standing on the shoulders of the rest of your team to to go into a different League or a different team or whatever yeah just two seconds I think that your child is in that room because there's a mystery guest joining us here.

Dan8:38

Today so um yeah it is very interesting I think I remember playing a game for Wales mixed um hockey and I remember literally giving everything to the point that I nearly had to crawl off the pitch and I was so mentally and emotionally drained because I think if I remember correctly it was it was two games over a weekend one game on a Saturday one game on Sunday and I remember I think we won the first game on the Saturday I was Captain in that.

Tom9:15

Year and it was the first time that we won a game in like 10 years so that was like amazing we can win the tournament by winning the next game um but then we lost the next day um so gold difference we lost overall even though it was a good achievement of winning and and you took the team to the next level to hopefully for them to win it another year either with me or without me it's giving them that hope.

Dan9:41

That we're not gonna get smashed or or lose every year that there is that hope that you can win one game so next it's win two games or win one and draw one to overall win and I remember just I think I was walking near the back to the hotel or to the train station this was back when I was based in Nottingham but I had to travel to Cardiff because it was a home game that year I remember.

Just like wanting just to cry and to crawl into a ball because it literally felt like I used so much energy that I just couldn't even function afterwards um which to be fair that hasn't happened often I think that was the only time that I was like when you've literally given it your all and that's the only time that I understand when you see players like that are very strong very confident like crumble either after win or either after.

A loss in like a final because you're like I gave everything and it still wasn't enough um obviously when you recover and you're like fair enough they won it and you could take on the chin a lot more but it is interesting when it's it's in the heat at the moment when you've literally given every using all your experience all the emotion all your mindset all your body and it's still not enough or it is enough and it's the overwhelm of the.

We're not overwhelmed of the loss and it can be quite tough that's why I think it's I'm sort of grateful that we don't need to do a lot of post interview stuff like you do on on football or rugby yeah the loss aren't they really because you're you're forced to analyze something that you're not really wanting to analyze because especially if it's an individual sport you're analyzing your own um failure of sorts and that's the thing is they want you to analyze it which.

Should probably be better in an hour or two's time after you've had a Coke and had some crisps or something to detox but actually in that moment with sugar and sugar yeah it's like in the moment you're just emotional so you're not gonna get a very um specific way of this is how you do this is where we went wrong detailed Viewpoint um so you do have to sort of take a step back and it is interesting that you tend.

To give or footballers tend to give quite vague answers back because clearly they've not looked at the footage it is just their live answer what fully's gone wrong or they know what's Funny's gone wrong but you don't want to out someone in the media straight away when you're in that pain or difficulty yeah shifting forward to like the mindset of individual sports versus uh team sports so I want to talk about like whether or not will whether or not.

You would teach you like push your kids and well not push whether or not you would um encourage kids into um into a team sport or an individual sport but before we get to that the mindset stuff so I've been thinking a lot about my own my own experience as well as asking my um try plus two Athlon friend my pentathlon guy uh Jack basically uh really the Baseline for anything is first try and weed out the um.

The the problems right weed out your mistakes a lot of the time in in a single sport your mistakes will be giving up points away so you want to weed out your mistakes then you want to craft some skill so you can kind of like plan ahead a little bit more and not necessarily focus on um your uh next serve or your next return but really where you're going to position it so you're more so thinking about the ball that they're going to be.

Hitting so they're return right so steps ahead in the thinking process which ultimately leads to this idea of control and then you can control the game in such a way that you can win so first eradicate fail like mistakes and your own your own mistakes then perfect a skill so you can kind of like think ahead position it where you want to like you can control okay I'm thinking I want to put it over here and it's going to.

Bounce here and kind of like know that stuff and like craft and then you get to this stage where you're thinking ahead so much so that you can control the game right yeah now how would somebody if you were to explain to somebody hey I'm new in a team sport and the whole reason why I'm fascinated with this is because this all transfers into business right but let's keep going with the sports side so from your experience with the team stuff.

What would you say are like some of the layers to be like a successful team player and I would say um pretend you're in an ideal state where everything goes to plan where you where you do have control so maybe it's more SIM from like a management or like a captain type level to kind of go through a positive thing where if you're going to blueprint to like from zero to a win this is what all the consecutive.

Wins this is what it would look like ew tough question if I had the secret sauce I I would probably be managing Liverpool or someone massive like that um I think it's a lot of the time I'll go from my perspective as a player I'd be always looking at my fitness levels because if your Fitness drops then you tend to focus drops you're passing tends to get worse and then you tend to um you're the one doing the mistakes so.

I'll always tend to aim to be the fittest on the pitch that was always my goal preferably if not like 10 over the first person on the pitch so then you know you've got enough in your tank if because mistakes will naturally happen we're humans so you might let in a goal but if you've got that extra 10 Fitness more than someone else you can then push even harder um to get that goal from that mistake so then you're alleviating some.

Room for error basically yeah it's probably my upbringing of watching Dragon Ball Z as I've been watching a lot this week as well it's just been that's going to be my pose for the for the thumbnail by the way okay cool and it's basically just being the most powerful player on the pitch um that's been my focus then it's been once it's Fitness then it's skill slash decision making so decision making either do you pass or do you run a lot.

Of the time or or take on or do skill um so that's a little bit more difficult so the skill is easier because that's you can practice that at home you can practice on the road you can practice anywhere decision making is tough because um either you're in the zone with people um sorry you're on the same mindset as someone or you're not and it's building that relationship up that you know when I get into this scenario I'm more likely.

Going to pass it to you to run down a line for you to pass it down the line and I'll pick it up there but if you're new to a team sometimes it can be quite tough because you will let's say pass but that person's already done a run down the line and then you've passed it out of play and then you're giving the ball away so there is element of yeah yeah because because you're still sussing out and you still communicating.

Because some people communicate more some people communicate less and you just sort of need a mind read and I think um you don't realize when you do find an amazing partnership or or with different teammates it's like gold dust because I remember being in a partnership with um Matt from school so he he was going through the ranks with me he was a forward and I was a Winger um to my knowledge I don't think we really spoke that much but yeah we just.

Understood exactly what each other was thinking and we were both too fast players so a lot of the time we just get a lot of goals for for us primary school and then our secondary school and one a lot and I think after going to loads of other clubs I did have um different uh connections or or mind reading but nowhere near to the same level that sometimes when I'd come back and play for for my local team with him that.

Would still be thinking very similar and I think stuff like that it's like gold dust for like any any form of leave from Sunday leave just like an Unwritten culture that you can click into yeah that's then yeah creating the plays that gives you the goals which like is a route one kind of thing yeah and I think that's the thing is it's quite sometimes I'm not even sure if it's fully possible to cultivate that or if it's.

More natural of bumping into those sort of players of either if it's how you think together or if it's your background or if it's your style it's quite hard to pinpoint exactly why did one work over the other that's why transfers are such a big thing in in football nowadays of finding the right players that click with one another it doesn't necessarily have to be two amazing players or two players that are going for goals it's actually it's like body parts there's no point.

Getting two right arms that's useless you might as well get one right and one left and make them work together I think it's finding out what that looks like um which is always quite tough yeah but yeah so that's some of the starting points and then after that it's probably a lot of tactics so when you attack or when you defend um when you sort of hold back and rest that you might be taking on a lot pressure when you press the opposition.

Because they look like they're gonna let in a goal um so then it's more the the sort of tactic sides of what you do is then as a whole as a team which then takes you down to ultimately the the controlling of a game to win a game right yeah yeah so just a recap individual Focus around Fitness and um kind of like Health type stuff performance then you shift into strategies tactics more so plays with other people so it's kind of like not.

Necessarily just the next shot but it's kind of like one two three four like a a four-step combo or like longer combos with in partnership with others and then it's more so high level strategic kind of like um chess game of like multiple people multiple things so depending on what scenario you're currently in you would therefore match scenario a with like offense a defense or or offense like attacking or defending for Like A or B so then you'd have this like strategic.

Approach um to ultimately and again their routines right if we if we call it routines or plays if you're losing then you'll do this particular play and you'll try and find the play that gives you the most reward right so for example if the weaker down one side you would you would run the ball down the right hand side because you've noticed that they're weaker right yeah I I think it's it's an interesting one because I think I don't know if it's through my my level.

Of hockey or if it's just the different teams I played for but as I first started it was very much um follow these cones do these routines on the pitch and it'll work but then as time's gone on they've changed it from instead of telling you go from A to B to C and that's what you should do um they just tend to place scenarios of three on three two on three one-on-one so then it's building up what do you do.

A it's sizing up your opponent to know if they've got any weaknesses and strengths and and B it's it's knowing your strengths of if you're good at running around on the right can you do that against every player or just some players so it's giving you more reactive yeah it's making you have a mindset that can work in that moment there and then that if you see there's two players and you've got three what overall should you be doing rather than a cone system that.

If that cone system doesn't work then you're stuck because you're not actually thinking on the pitch you become sort of a robot trying to mimic something that is quite hard to sometimes mimic so real realism realism to the scenarios of the actual day yeah which gives you the best approach from a mindset of like the speed of your or of your decision uh decision making yeah yeah and that's the thing is the more experience comes the more your.

Clock oh there's an angry player let's pinpoint them and see if they can throw in a bad tackle to get sent off or there's a soft player so I could run past him or there's a slope like you will slowly clock those types of ideas um yeah quicker and quicker and ideally the coach has an eye for that so then they can tell you what to do um when you're younger but sometimes they don't necessarily do that so then.

As you get older you you might learn that along the way or go to other teams to then pinpoint yeah so it is interesting it's what what are you aiming to do as a team as well it might be all about you guys performing well so sometimes you can perform well but still lose a game other times you might be just winning a game and actually you could perform bad and win a game and that's the thing is what.

Is the team goal and what are you aiming for that um because a lot of the time you want to play well because the results will come in the future but sometimes if it's a cup game that you don't have time to play badly because you might get knocked out is sometimes you just play for the win so you might play Scrappy or poorly or whatever but you get the win you can assess the rest of it out on the.

Training pitch yeah I think um taking this forward to one quick question is basically when you have kids will you put them into a team sport or an individual sport both probably could probably just see what what they enjoy and what they like because some things clicks some things don't um and it's more just what do they I think I'm not particularly as bothered them playing Super professional because I know how much taxing it is and the cost and the on Body Mind whatever but.

It's more just what do they enjoy doing because then they'll be their best selves and they'll make friends and they'll be in a safe environment but then also just the Practical thing of them more likely to keep healthy as they get older so then their fitness and health will make them um hopefully stay alive for longer so I'll be more going from a joint perspective and sussing what that looks out looks like I think I think for me.

Like two things that have come to mind with having kids is one putting them into some sort of debating uh debating class or something so they can um like critically think take ideas break them down figure out what works like and then feedback rationale and stuff and challenge things so I think debating things for like a confidence perspective is good and then the second part is I definitely think an individual sport yes they can definitely do whatever they want.

Um but an individual sport would be interesting because it crafts an interesting mindset and it's much easier to I would say easier to craft an individual mindset because there's less dependencies on other team players um but most importantly I think it's so they understand that it's okay to be disappointed um so you might like you guys listening or watching you might be like disappointed and be annoyed that you feel the emotion of disappointment or sadness and that's that's like good.

Obviously emotions is a spectrum and it's okay to feel all of the all of the Spectrum in moderation in like dosages that are like you know uh manageable because you recognize then that it's probably because you cared or like it's kind of like rolling down like okay I feel sad and disappointed why is that well actually it's because I cared and I tried my best and I did put in more effort and I was trying to give it my.

All and stuff which are good characteristics so I'd be like rather than focusing on the fact that you feel disappointed focus on the fact that you gave five percent more or ten percent more and that is the learning the positive kind of angle to it so when you take these and these as kind of like um patterns and things we've been speaking in a sports context if you like switch them over and match them up to things in.

Business or even employment generally speaking like firstly I was talking about you know eradicating your mistakes so like in business generally speaking you will make mistakes and the way to eradicate those is something like checklists one thing we used to have in the digital agency was a release checklist of things we would make sure that the website had before we would publish it live because a lot of the time we would forget one thing and that one time you forget it.

You add it to the list so then that doesn't become something you forget so like release checklists and kind of processes is a good thing to eradicate mistakes and and perfect that kind of like um like process and then on your side with stamina it is like are you resting enough is it someone in um someone on Tick Tock replied to one of our um stories like what's your take on days off and I was like oh you're super important.

Efficient efficient efficient and efficient yeah with the consecutive efficiencies and they were like what's my take on days off and I'm like did you reply yeah I did I was like days off are super important if you don't plan days off your body will plan days off for you in other words if you don't listen to your brain or like preemptively tell your brain hey we need to take time off or whatever your brain can like keep going right but you bring can't keep.

Going if your body then says actually we've had enough so what you want to do is like in your own brain think ahead of time before it ever gets to your body that your body starts giving up and you can't um do anything further and so being efficient a part of being efficient is resting um and you want to rest way before you think and this is me speaking from experience I always typically plan holidays um after the fact after the damage is.

Already done after the burnout after the like tiredness and stuff so you want to preemptively do it so then you never get this like hit rock bottom that you're always kind of like you know that Flappy Birds game you're always putting in energy so it keeps up um because that's ultimately what what we are right we're we're energy um buckets basically so you want to kind of like keep on putting in energy in whatever way that is if it's a holiday.

Or time of friends or whatever whatever um so we don't hit rock bottom and then I think as well the Strategic stuff so you're saying like working with others strategically and figuring that out is a really good thing so if you're like a solo business person can you get into Network events can you get into places with other people um to discuss the same kind of issues and and not face it on your own um and don't be afraid to take in.

Information and and resources and stuff and learn and it's like learning or like sharing problems is not a failure we're not meant to or have it all solved by ourselves I would say like if you're um if you're the like you want to kind of typically hire hire people that are better better than you right so that must mean that like you won't know everything so if that's good enough for Jeff Bezos or um Apple um Steve Jobs or.

Um or um all the celebrities all the famous people that are running businesses have jumped out my brain or or any anybody running a successful business they have had to um hire people that are better than them kind of thing right so it's a part of the culture that that happens at any other like crossovers from the sports thing that we've just discussed to how he would approach like your emotional life even um an unhealthy emotional life Maybe.

Of pushing through um but yeah maybe that's another podcast for another day well that's it right like this like with disappointment typically if you just keep on pushing through and never process it then it you never get the um the learning or the Golden Nugget or the positive angle to it that kind of gives you the energy like Flappy Birds to kind of keep going so is it that you know in an emotional state it's much more about reflection.

And and talking out loud I've even tried to I'm trying to talk out loud and more to speak with camera about stuff emotional things that I'm triggering that I'm embarrassed to share or like shouldn't be feeling um like oh I'm feeling this insecurity let me just share this in an in the sense to like de-power it to like remove the power that it has and then remove the shame on embarrassment that comes with it so um yeah I would say like.

Talking all this stuff out and processing it as you know like Tom and I are pretty open about emotional side of stuff and we're probably um I've got that because we want to better ourselves an improvement so if you want to improve yourself surely the emotional segment of the pie is something that you should work on otherwise you're not getting your full capacity because your logic side is one aspect your emotional side is there's another aspect and you're made of both aspects right so.

Yeah interesting so in conclusion it's fine to feel disappointed because that shows that you're like trying to improve if you're trying to batter yourself yeah it's human it's completely fine and it's what you do going forward to process it don't uh don't just finish at disappointment um kind of like craft it into yourself very often or process it yeah yeah take days off and and process that emotion and on that note uh we need to create a new um we need to get a new sponsor so.

We should put in Whoever has um gracefully um sponsored us um for this for this month roll the tape foreign [Music] Welsh Wednesdays carry your mind um Imagination in it um metal um uh best team um my papa thread the gadelva medal um doll events you know yeah um strategies yeah um badminton um I didn't mean um the removal um foreign effort um so sit or tea and dalya have our disappointment and um disappointment um [Laughter] doing processing yeah.
